Puss 'n Boots: Pero's Great Adventure

Puss 'n Boots: Pero's Great Adventure is a video game which was released released for the Nintendo by Electro Brain in 1990.

It is the sequel to a game called Nagagutsu wo Haita Neko: Sekai Isshuu 80 Nichi Dai Bouken, which was only released in Japan. The game is loosely based on Jules Verne's book, "Around the World in Eighty Days", and features Toei Animation's mascot as Pero - the main character. This character, as well as the title of the game, are both clearly influenced by Charles Perrault's fairytale, Puss in Boots.

In this game, Pero has been sent on a perilous time-travel journey around the world and into the past. He must locate and defeat the people responsible in order to return home.

This game is a side-scrolling action game and consists of seven stages. Pero has 3 lives and 3 continues with which to complete them all. He is also equipped with 3 weapons to help him: a gun, bombs, and a boomerang. During a number of stages, Pero also uses a vehicle, (either a plane, air balloon, car, or submarine), which offer their own unique weapons and/or abilities, enhancing the game play.

I don't even know how many hours I spent playing this game as a child! I loved it. Even though the gameplay seemed pretty straightforward, it had a couple 'puzzles' to figure out, and the flying/submarine levels were a lot of fun. (I just wish the prequel wasn't so frustrating!)
