Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers is the final console version of
Street Fighter 2 that was released. The game features the biggest update to Street Fighter 2 since its original release, with four new playable characters, plus minor modifications to the original characters. The game speed was slowed down from the Turbo edition and is closer to the Championship Edition game speed. Another change is that the game counts the number of hits in each combo and displays the count on screen.
The four new players consist of Cammy from England, Dee Jay from Jamaica, Fei Long from Hong Kong, and T. Hawk from Mexico.
The twelve returning characters include: Ryu, Ken, E.Honda, Chun-Li, Blanka, Zangief, Guile, Dhalsim, Balrog, Vega, Sagat, and M. Bison.
Gameplay consists of a series of best of 3 matches in which the player tries to knock-out the CPU component. The game uses 3 punch and 3 kick buttons, as well as specific combos and special moves for each character. Holding back will allow the player to block while standing or crouching, and different attacks have different priorities over others, making it a very complex and integrated gameplay experience for it's time. A time limit can also end the match and give the point to the character with the most life remaining. Also, if both players have the same remaining life, or knock each other out at the exact same time, no character will get the point.
The game also features 2 bonus stages after the 3rd and 6th fight. The first is a stage in which the player tries to destroy a car within a time limit. This stage is inspired by a similar stage in Final Fight. The second involves the player trying to destroy a brick wall, which is different from the barrels that drop down in the mini game from the arcade version.
This game marks the end of the Street Fighter 2 updates for consoles, though the arcade still saw the release of Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo, which added super moves and the hidden character Akuma. It was followed up by the Street Fighter Alpha series, as well as Street Fighter 3 and 4 for later consoles. Street Fighter Alpha 2 was the next, and last, Street Fighter game released for the SNES.
This game is available on Wii Virtual Consoles. Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo is available on Capcom Classics Collection Vol. 2, and a major update was released on PSN and XBLA as Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix.
