River City Ransom

River City Ransom is an English localized port of the Japanese game "Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari". 

Though the gameplay is very different, the game is part of Technos' Kunio-kun series which also includes Renegade and Super Dodge Ball for NES. 

The game features characters high school students Alex and Ryan, who have to save Ryan's girlfriend Cyndi from gang lord Slick.

While the game initially looks like a standard beat-em up along the same vein as Renegade or Double Dragon, there are a few role playing elements thrown in to distinguish itself. The game world is more open; players can choose which path they want to take throughout the game. There are quite a few options in each area. The game also features shopping areas where the players can talk to other characters and shop for items that increase their stats and strengthen Alex and Ryan.

The game features 9 different gangs with quite a few bosses.

Though the game did not perform well in America, it gained cult status afterwards and is known for its unique gameplay and humor. 

River City Ransom was also remade for the Gameboy Advance, and the NES title is currently available on Wii Virtual Console.
