Airwolf is a single-player shooter game, which was released by Acclaim in 1988. It is based on the "Airwolf" TV series and let's the player control the Airwolf helicopter from the cockpit as they play through 30 missions.
The objective of each mission is to rescue prisoners being held captive in enemy bases, while fighting enemy aircraft. Each level has a home base, where the player can repair the damage their helicopter has taken and refuel, a prisoner camp, where the prisoners are being held, and an enemy airfield. This airfield can be destroyed, which significantly decreases the number of enemies that pursue and attack the player. As the player must successfully land in the prisoner camp to rescue the prisoners, destroying the enemy airfield is an advantageous tactic.
To complete each mission, the player must rescue all of the prisoners and transport them to the border of the level without losing all of their lives.
Although the game is normally classified as a shooter, it also employs some of the characteristics of a simulation game, which enhances the quality of the gameplay.
