A Nightmare on Elm Street (NES)

A Nightmare on Elm Street is an NES action game published by LJN. The game is based on the horror movie franchise of the same name. The games mostly follow the plot of Dream Warriors and The Dream Master the 3rd and 4th movies in the franchise.

The game's plot is similar to the films. Freddy Kruger who was a child molester was burned and  killed by the parents of Elm Street but has come back in spirit form to invade the dreams of their children where he can kill them. In the films on which this game is based the group of kids learn that they can also have powers within the dreams that they can use to defend themselves.

As with the movies staying awake is an important aspect of the game. Each player has a sleep meter which decreases over time, and will decrease more quickly if the player gets hit. Collecting cups of coffee in the game can restore part of the sleep gauge. Once the sleep gauge depletes the kids are sent to the dream world where enemies are tougher and they must find radios to wake up. Freddy will also randomly attack the player in dream world.

In the game the kids can collect power-ups to temporarily transform into a strong warrior with unique abilities.

Warriors include the Shadow Warrior who has a flying kick and can throw shurikens, the acrobat who can do a somersault jump or throw javelins, and the necromancer who can hover and use fire magic.

The game allows for four player simultaneous co-op play through the NES Four Score or NES Satellite. The game features 4 character two boys and two girls.

Each player takes control of one of the kids while they fight their way through Elm Street. The goal is to find all the bones of Freddy Kruger and place them in a furnace.

The game begins on Elm Street where the player can choose an level to enter. There are 3 homes, one of which is randomly opened at the beginning of the game. The others open as levels are cleared.

Other levels include the Junk Yard, Cemetery, and Freddy's house. The last level is the school, which opens when all the previous levels have been completed. The player can only exit a level once they've collected all bones within.

Upon collecting all the bones in a level, the player is automatically put in the dream world and battles Freddy, who takes on a special form similar to those presented in the films. The final level is set at Elm Street High School as players make their way to the boiler room to burn Freddy's bones. Here one final battle with Freddy Krueger occurs.
