Xenophobe is the 2600 version of the Midway arcade title. It was ported to the Atari 2600 in 1990 by Atari. It's designed as a multi-player game, although in this version only 1 player can play at a time.
The game was known for being a complete split-screen experience. It was always presented as being split into 2 equal parts (3 for the arcade version). This feature allowed the players to freely explore the level separately.
The goal of the game is to explore the current level and defeat all the aliens infecting it. Once all aliens are defeated, the player can move onto the next stage. The game is made up of 8 levels which include the Mother Ship, Mother Base, Star Base, Moon City, Star Port, Moon Port, Star Ship, and Star City. There is no ending, though; the game simply loops back to level 1.
Each level features elevators that can be used to travel between floors. The levels are also populated with new weapons and items that can restore life or give point bonuses.
Weapons include the Phaser Gun, Laser Pistol, Lightening Gun, Smoke Gun, and Grenade.
The arcade version of Xenophobe is included in Midway's Arcade Treasures 2 for the PS2, Xbox and Nintendo Gamecube.
