Asteroids is a port of Atari's best selling arcade game.
The game uses vector graphics to render the player's ship, which is stuck in an asteroid field. The objective is to avoid collision and destroy as many asteroids a possible. Alien saucers will also come into play and fire on the player’s ship. To advance to the next stage, the player must clear the screen of all asteroids and saucers.
The player’s ship is a triangle which can turn left, right, or move forward. The screen wraps around in such a way that 'disappearing' off one edge will bring the ship in on the other side of the screen. The ship can fire, as well as use a risky defensive maneuver which instantly teleports it to another location on the screen.
Asteroids was the first 2600 game to use a bank-switched cartridge which doubled the available ROM space.
